A backhoe can speed up your construction project considerably. Once you have dug out the hole for your outdoor fire pits, you can then begin lining the bottom and sides. Stone is a good choice of material although you can use anything that gives you the same results. It would be a good idea however to use flat stones for the sides of your outdoor fire pits. This will result in better water drainage.
